A comprehensive info on the sustainable use of limestone as building material along the karstified part of the Adriatic coast.
The mobile application is developed within the RoofOfRock project, bringing together 10 partners from Slovenia, Italy, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina under the leadership of Geological Survey of Slovenia. The project was co-financed by the Adriatic IPA CBC Programme 2007 – 2013.
The RoofOfRock project introduced a joint platform for the sustainable use, preservation and promotion of platy limestone, with the creation of relevant guidelines and an upgrade of both individual and joint capacities in preserving this common natural and cultural heritage along the karstified part of the Adriatic coast.
The RoofOfRock application enables users to explore geological data, map layers, locations of houses and quarries and view selected 3D models of houses along with connected house elements made of platy limestone – limestone that was used to cover roofs, and construct dry walls, shepherds cottages (kažuni) and similar objects of cultural heritage. Some of the most interesting buildings in the area extending from Trieste to Dubrovnik were selected in order to best present limestone as an important element of cultural heritage. Platy limestones are also important as natural heritage, exhibiting diverse fossil fauna as well as rare, well-preserved vertebrate fossils.
This application has been produced with the financial assistance of the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA). The content is the sole work and responsibility of the RoofOfRock project partners and cannot, under any circumstances, be regarded as reflecting the position of the IPA Adriatic CBC Programme Authorities.
